University of Cape Town (2025) Fast-Forward Programme. Available at: https://www.uct.ac.za

The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking Africa (d-school Africa) has opened applications for the Fast-Forward for the Higher Education Professionals Programme – and it’s entirely free for all higher education staff members across South African universities.

The programme aims to empower professionals, individuals and faculty with human-centered approaches to real-world problem-solving through interactive, expert-guided workshops. Participants can choose to take this one-day course on either 11 or 13 November 2025, with workshops to be held at the d-school Africa.

The programme will highlight how a human-centered design approach to education means integrating tools and innovative methods. The outcomes result in educators becoming better at facilitating group work, creativity and sparking greater engagement.

Participants can expect an introduction to design thinking mindsets and an exploration of design thinking approaches through practical, team-based exercises, such as building an ideal university of the future or structuring more impactful learning classes online.

I

n a bold move to reshape the future of higher education, the University of Cape Town’s Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking Afrika (d-school Afrika) has launched the Fast-Forward for Higher Education Professionals Programme a free, one-day workshop designed to equip university staff with human-centered design thinking tools. Open to all higher education professionals across South African universities, this initiative is more than a course; it’s a call to action.

Scheduled for 11 and 13 November 2025, the workshops will be held at d-school Afrika, a space known for fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation. The programme promises to introduce participants to design thinking mindsets and methods through hands-on, team-based exercises. From envisioning the university of the future to crafting more engaging online learning experiences, attendees will be immersed in practical challenges that mirror the evolving demands of modern education.

At its core, the Fast-Forward Programme is about transformation. It recognizes that educators are not just conveyors of knowledge they are facilitators of growth, architects of learning environments, and mentors who shape the minds of tomorrow. By integrating human-centered approaches, the programme empowers educators to design solutions that are empathetic, inclusive, and impactful.

Personally, I find this initiative deeply inspiring. In a time when education systems are under pressure to adapt, innovate, and remain relevant, UCT’s offering feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s a reminder that change doesn’t always require sweeping reforms sometimes, it begins with a single workshop, a new mindset, or a shared vision for better learning.

Design thinking, as a methodology, has proven its value across industries. In education, it encourages experimentation, empathy, and collaboration qualities that are essential for engaging today’s diverse student populations. By introducing these principles to South African educators, the programme is planting seeds of innovation that will ripple across classrooms, campuses, and communities.

What makes this initiative even more powerful is its accessibility. Offering the programme at no cost to participants sends a clear message: every educator matters. Every voice deserves to be heard. Every idea has the potential to spark change. It’s a gesture of trust and investment in the very people who carry the torch of knowledge forward.

The deadline for applications is 28 October 2025, and I would urge every eligible professional to consider applying. Not just for the skills they’ll gain, but for the opportunity to reconnect with their purpose, collaborate with peers, and contribute to a movement that’s redefining education in South Africa.

In the end, the Fast-Forward Programme isn’t just about learning new tools it’s about reigniting passion, embracing possibility, and stepping boldly into the future. It’s about believing that education can be more human, more creative, and more powerful than ever before. And it starts with those who dare to lead it.

The practical, team-based exercises from envisioning the university of the future to designing more engaging online classes are more than activities. They’re invitations to dream boldly and act bravely. They challenge participants to think beyond limitations and imagine what education could look like if we truly designed it for people.

And perhaps most importantly, this programme is free. That simple fact carries profound meaning. It says: “We believe in you. We value your role. We want you to thrive.” It’s a gesture of trust and investment in the very people who shape the minds and hearts of tomorrow.

So to every higher education professional across South Africa: this is your moment. Join a community of changemakers who are ready to redefine learning. Because the future of education isn’t waiting it’s being built by those who dare to believe that better is possible -And that future needs you.
