From Crisis to Opportunity: Empowering Youth Through Emerging Industries

Momentum Group Foundation. (2025). Unlocking youth potential through sunrise sectors: Bridging education and employment gaps in South Africa. [online] Available at: https://www.momentumfoundation.co.za

South Africa’s youth stand at a critical juncture. With more than four in 10 young people between the ages of 15-34 not in employment, education, or training, the challenge of youth unemployment has never been more urgent. But within this challenge lies immense opportunity – an opportunity that can be unlocked through sunrise sectors.

Sunrise sectors are emerging industries experiencing rapid growth in revenue, investment, and employment opportunities – and they are poised to play a significant role in the economy’s future. These include areas such as global business services, agriculture, the care economy, digital industries, infrastructure, and the green economy. What makes these sectors vital is not just their growth potential but their ability to provide meaningful, sustainable employment for young people.

Addressing equitable access to these opportunities is one of the most significant challenges we face, particularly for youth in rural areas. For meaningful change, resources and opportunities must reach young people where they are, instead of being concentrated in urban centres.

Equally crucial is fostering partnerships between the private sector and educational institutions, particularly Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, to align training programmes with the needs of these growing industries. There is a stark gap between the skills young people acquire and the demands of the job market.

For example, training apprentice car mechanics on a 1978 model or offering plumbing courses without modern equipment limits the relevance and employability of graduates. To prepare youth for tomorrow’s economy, the private sector and government must collaborate to ensure these institutions are equipped with industry-relevant tools and curricula.

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education also plays a pivotal role in preparing youth for the future. However, technical skills alone are not enough. An entrepreneurial mindset, coupled with access to practical training and mentorship, is essential. In Germany, 80% of employees work in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In South Africa, the reverse is true, highlighting a vast, untapped space for SME growth.

At the Momentum Group Foundation, our mission is to empower youth by bridging the gap between formal education and the demands of these burgeoning industries. We focus on creating access to strategic sectors for marginalized groups, with transformation at the core of our agenda. Through partnerships with nine non-profit organizations, we invest in initiatives that equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and tools they need to succeed in these high-growth sectors.

Take, for example, our Women in Farming programme. This partnership with Agri SA supports young women in agriculture, equipping them with the tools, training, and funding needed to transform their small-scale enterprises into thriving businesses. Through this programme, beneficiaries have been able to expand their operations, create jobs, and gain access to new markets.

For some, the programme not only provided R80,000 in funding but also offered essential training in business management, financial literacy, and compliance, enabling them to build a sustainable enterprise.

Momentum Group Foundation is also deeply invested in the ICT space, recognising its potential to drive youth employment and economic inclusion. Through partnerships with organisations such as WeThinkCode_ and Life Choices Academy, the foundation equips young people with critical digital skills.

These initiatives not only provide coding and software development training but also ensure job placements in a rapidly evolving tech sector. By bridging the gap between education and industry demands, these programmes empower youth with the tools they need to thrive in the digital economy.

South Africa’s sunrise sectors hold the promise of brighter futures for our youth. By investing in education, skills, and entrepreneurship, and fostering partnerships across sectors, we can help young South Africans not just find jobs, but create them, building a more inclusive and dynamic economy for generations to come.

As a young South African, I often feel like we’re standing at a crossroads full of potential but blocked by barriers we didn’t build. The unemployment stats aren’t just numbers to us; they’re our daily reality. We’re told to dream big, but without access to the right skills or opportunities, those dreams feel out of reach.

That’s why the idea of sunrise sectors like renewable energy, digital services, and agro-processing gives me hope. These industries aren’t just buzzwords; they’re lifelines. If government, business, and education systems can work together to equip us with the skills these sectors demand, we won’t just survive we’ll thrive.

But it can’t be lip service. We need real investment in training, mentorship, and infrastructure. We need leaders who see us not as a problem to fix, but as partners in building the future. Give us the tools, and we’ll build the South Africa we all want to live in.

South Africa stands at a pivotal moment in its history. With youth unemployment hovering around 45%, the country faces not just an economic challenge, but a generational crisis. For millions of young South Africans, the promise of freedom and opportunity feels increasingly out of reach. But amid the uncertainty, a new horizon is emerging one defined by sunrise sectors

The numbers are staggering. Nearly half of South Africa’s youth are unemployed, and many more are underemployed or stuck in informal work. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a lived experience for young people across the country. The root causes are complex: a mismatch between education and market needs, limited access to skills development, and a lack of inclusive economic growth.

Despite the challenges, hope is not lost. Emerging industries—known as sunrise sectors—are showing immense potential to absorb youth into meaningful employment. These include:

  • Renewable Energy: With South Africa’s energy transition underway, solar and wind projects are creating demand for technicians, engineers, and project managers.
  • Digital Technology: The rise of e-commerce, fintech, and remote work has opened doors for coders, designers, and digital marketers.
  • Agro-Processing: Rural youth can tap into value-added agriculture, turning raw produce into market-ready goods.
  • Creative Industries: Music, film, fashion, and gaming are booming, offering platforms for self-expression and entrepreneurship.

These sectors don’t just need workers they need innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders. And South Africa’s youth are ready to rise. “We are not just the leaders of tomorrow we are the builders of today.”

This quote captures the spirit of a generation that refuses to be sidelined. Young South Africans are not waiting for handouts they’re demanding access to skills, mentorship, and platforms to thrive. The frustration of being overlooked is real, but it’s also a powerful fuel for change.

To unlock the potential of sunrise sectors, a coordinated effort is essential:

  • Government must invest in vocational training, digital literacy, and infrastructure.
  • Businesses must open doors through internships, apprenticeships, and inclusive hiring.
  • Educational institutions must align curricula with market needs.
  • Communities must support youth-led initiatives and celebrate local success stories

South Africa cannot afford to lose another generation to unemployment and despair. The solutions are within reach but they require bold action, visionary leadership, and unwavering belief in the power of youth. Sunrise sectors are more than economic engines they are vehicles of transformation. If we invest in young people today, we won’t just reduce unemployment we’ll ignite innovation, rebuild trust, and shape a nation that reflects the brilliance of its youth.

The time to act is not tomorrow. It’s now. Let’s build a South Africa where every young person has the chance not just to survive—but to soar.
